As a concert photographer, I had the pleasure of capturing unique moments at the Musiktheater Piano in Dortmund. The Musiktheater Piano is a theatre in Dortmund that specialises in events of various musical genres. It is a favourite venue for music enthusiasts in the region, especially for lovers of jazz, blues and rock music.
Over a century ago, it still smelled of freshly baked bread rolls here. Today, concerts are held here. The former inn "Zum Deutschen Haus" at Lütgendortmunder Straße 43 has been transformed into the vibrant "Musiktheater Piano". From the outside, the building still looks like a timeless inn from days gone by, but inside, visitors can expect a fascinating journey through Art Nouveau, an architectural style that is rarely found in Dortmund.
When you walk along Lütgendortmunder Straße, you immediately notice the imposing volume of the building. On closer inspection, you notice the unusual structure of the building and some of the façade details due to its age. An inscription above the courtyard gate, "1873. Wilh. Roggenkämper. 1903", gives a first indication that the "Zum Deutschen Haus" inn was not built all at once.
The historical monument was built as early as 1873 as a bakery and inn "Zum deutschen Haus" with a classicist gable in the eastern part. After 30 years, when the inn was flourishing, the decision was made to expand. The bakery was given up, the inn was massively extended and the old façade was adapted to the new part. A large hall with a stage and balcony was added to provide space for various performances at family and club celebrations. In the late 1960s, the demand for pubs declined. More and more people spent their evenings at home as television became part of their daily lives. In the 1970s, part of the building was therefore used as student accommodation.
Today's operators have woken the magnificent Art Nouveau hall from its slumber. As a popular venue for music, especially for the jazz, blues and rock scene, the Piano is now known and appreciated far beyond Dortmund.
