Event photography in Dortmund at the WDR4 event “Ab in die 80er”
As an event photographer, I took the professional photos of the WDR4 event “Ab in die 80er” in the Westfalenhalle Dortmund. As a child of the 80s, it was a special pleasure for me to photograph this event. As an experienced photographer, I am normally out and about in the Westfalenhalle and the neighboring exhibition halls to capture meetings, trade fairs, company celebrations, anniversaries, conferences and gala events.
The year before, I was also involved in "Ab in die 80er" 2022 and photographed artists such as Midge Ure, OMD, xPropaganda, Sydney Youngblood and Sandra.
The Westfalenhalle Dortmund is not only a well-known venue, but also a place full of history, especially in the 1980s. Back then, legendary moments were created here, for example with “Peter's Pop Show”, which succeeded “Tommy's Pop Show” in 1985. Peter Illmann, the former presenter of “Formel Eins”, hosted the pop show on ZDF from the end of 1985, which was broadcast from the Westfalenhalle. He was the perfect choice for this program.
For the 80s event, WDR4 brought these artists on stage that evening: Fancy, Nick Kershaw, Spider Murphy Gang, Kim Wilde and Holly Johnson.
Fancy released his first song “Slice me Nice” under this artist name in 1984. The song reached number 11 in Germany, number 9 in Switzerland and even number 2 in Austria. With his Italo-pop, Fancy creates a good atmosphere, and the 5,500-plus spectators are already enthusiastic at the start of the event.
Nick Kershaw, one of the great icons of the 1980s, is known for hits such as “The Riddle” and “Wouldn't It Be Good”. Before his breakthrough, he played in British underground bands. His performance in the Westfalenhalle Dortmund shows a rock side that fits perfectly with the style of the time.
The event evening will be hosted by Peter Illmann, a well-known TV presenter who is himself an icon of the 80s.
The Spider Murphy Gang are best known for their hit “Skandal im Sperrbezirk”, which spent 35 weeks at number one in the charts in Germany in 1981 - 16 weeks in Austria and 11 weeks in Switzerland. In Dortmund's Westfalenhalle, this song was met with great enthusiasm. Günther Sigl, the band's bassist and singer, clearly enjoyed asking the audience whether they liked rock 'n' roll and immediately adding that he wouldn't play anything else anyway.
While the stage is being set up for the next stars, DJ Torsten Matschke ensures that there is no chance of boredom. With the greatest hits of the 80s, he gets the audience in the mood and invites them to party.
Kim Wilde, who was known for her wild mane in the 1980s, has lost some of her wildness, but her energy is still clearly noticeable. With “Keep Me Hanging On”, she landed a huge hit, particularly in Germany, Switzerland and the UK. However, her biggest hit remains “Kids In America”, her first single from 1981. In the Westfalenhalle, Kim Wilde inspires the audience and gets them moving.
The audience, some of whom have come all the way from abroad, naturally have different favorite artists - whether Kim Wilde, Holly Johnson or Nik Kershaw. But they are all fans of 80s music and celebrate a great 80s party together.
Holly Johnson, who rose to fame in the 1980s with Frankie Goes To Hollywood, thrills audiences with his powerful and impressive stage presence.He still has many loyal fans today.
