From glorious sunshine to spectacular fireworks in the evening – Japan Day 2026 in Düsseldorf thrilled hundreds of thousands of visitors and once again transformed the Rhine promenade into a colourful festival brimming with cosplay, anime and Japanese culture. Around 700,000 people came together to celebrate one of Europe’s biggest Japan-themed events, creating a unique atmosphere along the banks of the Rhine, with a stage programme and impressive cosplay displays.
As a cosplay photographer, I had the privilege of capturing the finest moments of Japan Day: creative characters, intricately designed costumes, emotive portraits and the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary event. From detailed anime cosplays and fantasy and gaming characters to impressive group shots, I took authentic photographs right in the heart of Düsseldorf.
As an event photographer in Düsseldorf, I was right in the thick of things, capturing beautiful moments, creative personalities and emotional encounters through my lens.
Amidst spectacular Demon Slayer cosplays, intricately detailed kimono outfits, fantasy characters, furry suits and elaborately designed anime interpretations, authentic cosplay portraits with a unique atmosphere were created. In particular, the warm summer light on the banks of the Rhine and the energetic atmosphere of the event made Japan Day 2026 once again a highlight for cosplayers, photographers and anime fans from all over Germany.
Japan Day Düsseldorf is one of Europe’s largest Japan and anime events and offers countless opportunities for creative cosplay photography every year. My focus is on natural portraits, a cinematic visual style and attention to detail — from expressive make-up to intricately crafted costumes.
Alongside traditional portrait shots, the photographer also captured dynamic scenes amidst the hustle and bustle of the festival, group photos, character-driven shots and emotional snapshots around the stage, the banks of the Rhine and the fireworks.
