Japan Day in Düsseldorf is one of the largest Japanese cultural festivals in Europe and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the banks of the Rhine every year. The highlight of the event is the spectacular, handcrafted Japanese fireworks display, which transforms the sky above Düsseldorf into a spectacular sea of colour.
“What a wonderful world – A fireworks display full of joie de vivre”
This year’s show is all about peace, hope and joie de vivre. Once again, the fireworks are being organised by Japanese pyrotechnics master Hideki Kubota, who has been designing this time-honoured spectacle in Düsseldorf for many years. He arrived with his family several days before the event to prepare for the elaborate show.
Smileys and hearts as symbols of peace
Particularly moving: the fireworks display is set to feature numerous smileys and hearts in the night sky – symbolising a peaceful world without war.
Hideki Kubota explained beforehand: “We want to portray a better world without war, because unfortunately there is far too much of it.”. He said the message behind the fireworks was particularly significant to him: “Bombs and fireworks are made of the same material. But fireworks serve a completely different purpose – they symbolise peace.”
This concept is also reflected visually throughout the production: glowing hearts, harmonious colour schemes, cascades of golden light and perfectly coordinated effects over the Rhine.
