As a sports photographer and event photographer I was in Essen at the Zeche Zollverein with my camera at ExtraSchicht during the Industrial Culture Night on the soccer theme of "The round and the square". In June 2023, the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site offered a varied program, which this year was based on the special exhibition "Myth and Modernity: Football in the Ruhr Area" at the Ruhr Museum. The area around the Doppelbock at Zollverein in Essen was transformed into a large playground for live events, walking acts and hands-on sporting activities.
As a press photographer from Bochum the sporty walking act, the artist ensemble CARACHO with my camera in Essen. A tough Ruhr area trainer, in proper style with leather sandals and socks, accompanied by a soccer and a whistlehead or referee who likes to hand out red and yellow cards. It was a great photo opportunity for the press photographers and numerous visitors to the Extraschicht event in Essen also took the opportunity to take some fun photos with this sporty trio.
At this cultural event, the meadow in the Zeche Zollverein in Essen was transformed into the "Glückauf Arena" with goals, center circle, coach's bench, floodlights and corner flags. Professionals presented their soccer freestyle tricks on the "holy turf", accompanied by entertaining walk acts at half-time. Stadium sausages and historical soccer commentaries added to the atmosphere, and visitors could pose behind photo walls. Table soccer enthusiasts were able to show off their skills and had the opportunity to compete against the professionals present and win a certificate or a prize. ExtraSchicht guests were also able to try their hand at Chinese Jianzi feather soccer. A day as wonderful as today!
